The study aims to develop and validate a tool called Infant-Directed Speech Inventory(IDSI)
measuring the content of parents’ communication to the child, the Infant-Directed Speech.
Description, repetition, vocabulary are the key components of this study. A total of 30
multilingual parents (Mage = 36.17, SD = 2.84; 15 females) from Pune having a single
child between age 1 to 3 (Mage = 2.47 , SD = 0.64; 6 females, 9 males) participated in
the study. They were administered 41 items on IDS (Infant-Directed Speech), and the
Extraversion scale of 12 items of the NEO-FFI inventory. Reliability testing of internal
consistency (Cronbach’s á = .845), and Convergent validity with NEO-FFI E scale (r =
.586, p < .001) was obtained. IDS NPF indicates a reliable and a valid measure useful
in assessing the parents’ language input. The scale has wide scope in understanding
a crucial component of children’s language development
